During ALA Annual, CBLDF is delighted to be launching the latest edition of the CBLDF Banned Books Week Handbook, a guide to the challenges that young adult comics face, an introduction to challenged comics, a resource for fighting library challenges, and a reference for Banned Books Week programing! We’ll also have the newest issue of CBLDF Defender, our quarterly news magazine coming to you from the front lines of the fight for free speech! This issue features 10 women who changed free expression, the attacks on cartoonists around the world, the fight for summer reading, and more!

While you’re at ALA Annual, don’t miss CBLDF: Protecting Comics: Authors & Experts On Fighting Graphic Novel Challenges, an introduction to CBLDF and our important work. The panel takes place Sunday, June 28, 12:00 – 1:00 p.m., on the Graphic Novel / Gaming Stage. From the ALA website:

Comics and graphic novels are achieving more acclaim than ever, which is leading to an increase in demand as well as challenges. The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund brings together perspectives on graphic novel censorship from authors Jillian and Mariko Tamaki and Gene Luen Yang, alongside expert observations from Eva Volin, Supervising Children’s Librarian for the Alameda Free Library in California, and CBLDF Executive Director Charles Brownstein.
