CBLDF Elects David Steinberger To Board of Directors

Comic Book Legal Defense Fund is proud to welcome David Steinberger, Co-founder and CEO of comiXology, an Amazon Company, to its Board of Directors, where he will serve alongside other current officers: President Christina Merkler; Vice President Chris Powell; Treasurer Ted Adams; and Secretary Dale Cendali. CBLDF’s at-large directors are Jeff Abraham, Jennifer L. Holm, Reginald Hudlin, Katherine Keller, Paul Levitz, and Gene Luen Yang. CBLDF’s Board of Directors oversees CBLDF’s mission protecting, preserving, and promoting the freedom to read comics.

“The CBLDF serves an essential function in the world of comics, manga, and graphic novels,” Steinberger said. “As a member of this community, I’m excited to take a larger role alongside the impressive group of Board Members to help promote and encourage the freedom and diversity of comics. It’s as important as ever to be vigilant.”

For more than thirty years, Comic Book Legal Defense Fund has protected the First Amendment rights of comics field and developed powerful education efforts in the service of the community. CBLDF has supported a wide range of cases in 2019, including successfully protecting the graphic novel Fun Home in New Jersey and providing legal support to retailers, educators, and creators. The organization’s resources support understanding and protection of First Amendment rights, most recently with Be Heard!, a comic book for students to help them understand their protest rights and the upcoming retailer handbook Selling Comics. David Steinberger is the CEO and co-founder of comiXology, Amazon’s premier digital comic shopping and reading service, where he oversees comiXology and Amazon’s digital comic books business worldwide.

David graduated from the Manhattan School of Music and Juilliard with classical singing performance degrees (Master of Music and Advanced Certificate, respectively). In 2008 he received his MBA from the NYU Stern School of Business where he and his cofounders won a competition for the business plan that became comiXology.
