Conventions 1999
Con Reports:
AUGUST 1999
Comic-Con
International: Take one part gorgeous weather, one part ocean
view, mix in a liberal helping of the most talented creators in comics
-- shake well -- and you've got Comic-Con
International, the nation's premiere celebration of comics and pop
culture. It's the culmination of the comics calendar, a must-see event
for everyone who cares about comics.
MAY 1999
Motor City Comicon:
Southfield, MI
The 1999 Motor City Comicon was one of the most celebrity-rich comic
conventions the Fund have ever seen. Where else could you find Enos
from Dukes of Hazard and 7 of 9 from Star Trek: Voyager under
one roof? Plus, a three hour pro-wrestling exhibition? And Billy
Dee Williams?
Big Easy Comic-Con:
New Orleans, LA
When Roger Price said he was going to put on a New Orleans show over
Memorial Day weekend, publishers, exhibitors, and fans made sure to
save those dates...
Ramapo: Westchester
County, NY
It was with a heavy heart that I set off for Ramapo, New York. This
year's Ramapo Comic Convention was to be the last. The Rockland County
convention has been put on by the Ramapo High School Comic Book Club,
but with the retirement of the Club's faculty advisor the organization
and its convention will be no more.
APRIL 1999:
Pittsburg
Comicon: Pittsburgh, PA
Running like the well-oiled machine guests and fans have come to
expect, the sixth annual Pittsburgh Comicon (April 23-25) was
the best show of the Spring for the CBLDF and one of the all-around
great shows of the con season. (Featuring the Defender
of Liberty Award ceremony and gala.)
Radcon II: Hampton, VA
Now, I’ve been to a few comic conventions in my day, not a lot mind
you, but a few, and RadCon II was special. Not just for the diversity
of guests, but also for the entertainment throughout the day.
MARCH 1999:
Planet Comicon:
Kansas City, MO
On March 27 and 28, the CBLDF landed at the first-ever Planet
Comicon, a premiere comic book and pop culture event in Kansas City.
The show’s guests included strong fund supporters Jim Krueger
(writer of Earth X), and Mark Waid (Captain America), who always
proves himself a true sentinel of liberty.
FEBRUARY 1999:
MegaCon '99:
Orlando, FL
Getting CBLDF executive director Chris Oarr to Florida in early March
is certainly one of the easiest tasks the CBLDF has had to face. "Frankly,"
Oarr said, "I'd set up a booth at the Orlando Beanie Baby Show, if it
was held during the winter."
Wagons West! The CBLDF Hits the Convention
Trail:
Portland Comic
Book Show: Portland, OR
Wedged between Uncle Owen of Star Wars and red-hot Oni Press,
the Fund couldn't ask for better company. No wonder so many people who
visited the con stopped by our booth.
APE VI: San Jose, CA
APE VI was the sixth annual meeting of the Alternative Press Expo,
a convention dedicated to alternative comics, small-press books, zines
and other cool stuff in comics. The beauty of APE is the laid-back accessibility
that characterizes the creators at the show. This atmosphere provides
a nexus for artists and fans who truly love the medium.
