Ramapo High SchoolThe Ramapo High School Comic Book Club held its 12th annual comic convention on May 16, 1998 in Spring Valley, NY. Ramapo is one of the longest-running and best-attended high-school comic shows in the country. The school gymnasium swarmed with fans and professionals in a very relaxed and casual atmosphere. Joe Quesada, Jimmy Palmiotti, Sarah Dyer, Evan Dorkin, Louise Simonson, Al Williamson, Marie Severin, and many others professionals were there to greet and inspire the kids. Xenozoic Tales creator Mark Schultz came as well and sat at the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund table. Known for his elaborate artwork, he did spectacular sketches and signed books for over three hours, despite nursing a cold. Altogether, Schultz raised nearly $200 for the Fund. The show was organized by Allan Rosenberg and Jay Horowitz, who invited the CBLDF to attend. The Comic Club donated table space to the Fund, and chipped in an additional $100 off the top. The show ran from 10 AM to 4 PM, with attendance between 200 and 250. All told, the CBLDF. raised more than $600 to help the fight against censorship in comics. |
