Countdown
to Comic-Con, continued...
SATURDAY, AUGUST 15: COMIC-CON WEEKEND
Saturday the convention hall opens bright and early at 9:30am, and Mark
Schultz follows close behind with a signing session at the CBLDF booth,
beginning at 10am. Many will recognize Mark as the genius behind
Cadillacs and Dinosaurs; others will note that he's the new scripter of
DC's Action Comics. However you know his work, you'd have to agree that
Mark Schultz is a comic book talent of the first rank, and the CBLDF is
happy to have him.
At 12 noon, the CBLDF will host award-winning cartoonist Dan Clowes,
whose comics appear in leading magazines such as Details and Esquire as
well as his own title, Eightball.
Clowes will be judging the "Dan Pussey Look-Alike Contest", so if you
think you resemble one of the most popular characters ever to grace the
pages of Eightball, please drop by. Absolutely no prize will be awarded,
but the winner will have his picture posted on the CBLDF Web site. Fame
and fortune can be yours...
Joining
us at 2 o'clock is the creative team behind the revamped WildCATS
due for release in December 1999. Writer Scott Lobdell, artist
Travis Charest, inker Richard Friend and colorist Alex
Sinclair comprise a high-powered quartet whose credits include many
of the most widely-read comics in recent history. They'll be on hand to
sign the limited edition Wildcats
Benefit Print organized by Wildstorm productions and Jim Mugno
of Dreamscape Comics in Orange, CA.
Fans of Charest, Friend, and Lobdell will be pleased to learn that our
next issue of BUSTED! will feature an interview with the new WildCATS
team, in which they talk about comics, censorship, and why they support
the CBLDF.
There will be a special benefit auction on behalf of Karen Vess,
wife of Charles Vess on Saturday, August 15 at 3 pm at the San
Diego International Comic-Con. All proceeds will go toward the daunting
medical and rehabilitation costs she has incurred due to a car accident.
We have more details available,
including some of the excellent items up for bid--include the original
manuscript for Good Omens, donated by Neil Gaiman.
Ivan Brunetti, self-hating creator of the hilarious Schizo, rounds out a fun filled Saturday with a special sort
of sketching session 4pm at the CBLDF booth. Ivan, known for his
subversive one panel gags, will create a unique cartoon on any subject
you choose. Give him a springboard and watch him go!
Just because the exhibit hall's closed doesn't mean the Comic-Con is
over, especially SATURDAY NIGHT. That's when the CBLDF BENEFIT PARTY
gets under way. Sponsored by Fantagraphics, Last Gasp, NBM, and Quebecor
(Ronalds), the CBLDF Benefit Party has a proud tradition as the wildest,
woolliest industry party six years running. The bacchanal begins at 9pm
at 342 7th Avenue, directly behind the Clarion Hotel. Admission is $5 and
includes all the beer you can drink. Tickets (featuring art by Comic-Con
Guest of Honor Robert Williams) are available at the CBLDF booth or
through Fantagraphics, Last Gasp, and NBM. Don't miss the social event
of the season!
