Neil Gaiman Launches Babylon 5 Script at San Diego

Neil Gaiman Northampton, MA -- Acclaimed comics and television writer Neil Gaiman and Dream Haven Books have joined forces again in another benefit for the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. Dream Haven's new Day of the Dead reprints the script from Gaiman's enormously popular Babylon 5 episode of the same name in a deluxe, annotated format. The book debuts at the San Diego Comic-Con International and one-third of all proceeds will go directly to the Fund.

The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund is a non-profit organization defending the First Amendment rights of the comics community. Gaiman, the award-winning author of DC's Sandman, has long been one of the Fund's staunchest supporters. In the past, he's teamed with Dream Haven Books publisher and CBLDF board-member Greg Ketter to produce limited-edition works such as Snow, Glass, Apples and On Cats & Dogs (still available at the CBLDF Catalog) to help raise money for the Fund.

"I liked the idea that television fans could also support the CBLDF," said Gaiman.

Day of the Dead came about thanks to B5 fan requests for Gaiman to put his script for the show online. B5 creator J. Michael Straczynski cautioned Gaiman that making scripts available over the Internet often leads to bootleg copies being sold at sci-fi conventions for $30 or more. It was Gaiman's idea to satisfy the fan's request for the script and at the same time help the fight against censorship in comics.

"I liked the idea that television fans could also support the CBLDF," said Gaiman. "There are so many enthusiastic B5 fans out there, often in the strangest of places. Greg Ketter and designer Bob Garcia turned my idea into reality in record time."

In addition to the complete original B5 script, Day of the Dead also includes an introduction by Straczynski and copious annotation by Gaiman himself. The annotations detail the evolution of the script and the changes necessitated by the casting of guest stars Penn and Teller. The script also includes scenes cut from the final shooting script.

"Day of the Dead" is a deluxe, 48 page saddle-stitched volume retailing for $12.95. The initial print run numbers 5,000, with additional print runs based on demand. This translates to a hypothetical donation to the CBLDF of $6,500 from the first printing alone.

Day of the Dead will debut at the Dream Haven booth at the San Diego Comic-Con. It is not currently carried by Diamond Comic Distributors, but copies will be available from the CBLDF Web site catalog at following Comic-Con.

Additional donations can always be sent directly to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund at P.O. Box 693, Northampton, MA 01061. Be sure to check out Busted! The Newsletter of the CBLDF or our Web site for more news and information.

The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund was founded in 1986 as a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of First Amendment rights for members of the comics community. Donations and inquiries should be directed to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund.
