Jay & Silent Bob light up CBLDF in San Diego

Jay and Silent Bob

Connections 98, San Diego--Kevin Smith's popular film characters, Jay and Silent Bob, burst on to the comics scene this summer with their own hit title, published by Oni Press. Now Graphitti Designs is bringing the fan-favorite hooligans to the action figure market, and the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund couldn't be more grateful.

Graphitti Designs, Oni Press, and Smith's View Askew have produced a "Semi-Politically Correct Variant Edition" of the Jay and Silent Bob action figure set for retailers attending Connections 98, the industry trade show that precedes Comic-Con International. Only 1000 of the variant sets have been produced, and the 500 not slated as retailer giveaways will be sold at the Graphitti booth once Comic-Con begins. $10 from each set---$5,000 in all---will go directly to the CBLDF.

The Jay and Silent Bob action figures are not scheduled to hit comic shops until October, and you can be sure this advance variant will go like hotcakes at North America's largest comic book convention. Graphitti, Oni, and View Askew wanted to make the Fund part of this special event. According to Graphitti's Bob Chapman, "This is our opportunity to give the public a chance to get a very unique variant while donating to a very important organization---one that we hope we'll never have to use."

"We didn't want to bogart all the money to be made off of these super-limited variant editions. Instead, we thought we'd pass the stash over to the fine folks at the CBLDF," explains Bob Schreck of Oni Press. "It's merely an act of self-preservation. With Oni's editorial tastes, it's only a matter of time before our butts will be up on charges!"

The Jay and Silent Bob figures, designed by Matt Wagner, stand 8" high and are generously articulated. Each set includes loads of neat accessories plus Stoner Boner, the priaptically-enhanced canine of Oni's comic book series.

"With Oni's editorial tastes, it's only a matter of time before our butts will be up on charges!"

Collectors will be interested to know that the Semi-Politically Correct Variant Edition includes a special photo cover variant of the Jay and Silent Bob comic, in which each character is holding one of the action figures. This photo cover is also limited to only 1,000 copies.

"When Bob Chapman called to tell me what he and the boys had cooked up for the Fund, I gotta say I was totally stoked," mumbled CBLDF Executive Director Chris Oarr. "I saw the prototypes at Heroes Con last month, and I can tell you fans are going to flip when they see them. How they got Stoner Boner to stand up I'll never know."

The Semi-Politically Correct Variant Edition Jay and Silent Bob are available at the Graphitti/Oni/View Askew island at Comic-Con International while supplies last.

The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund was founded in 1986 as a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of First Amendment rights for members of the comics community. Donations and inquiries should be directed to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund.
