Neil Gaiman on the Perils of Parasailing

The whole parasailing business is entirely the fault of Chris Oarr. Chris decided that parasailing was a cool thing that he'd always wanted to do and I went along with him. The first day we went out and had a marvelous time. It was a magic day. We parasailed, we wave-runnered, we found this amazing little place in the middle of nowhere and leapt off a bridge and sunned on the rocks and had one of the finest dinners I've ever had. It was great.

Check out the video clip of Neil's landing (485k, requires QuickTime).

The second day we went down to the beach in Mazatlan and there was more parasailing and I thought, "I'm going up again." Jill Thompson went up beautifully and came down as beautifully. Then they strapped me in and the boat went off. I went up like a kite, and then I noticed that I was coming down rather like a kite as well. Initially I didn't realize that what had happened was that the engine had cut out on the boat below. I thought there was something I was doing wrong. And then it was really too late to wonder what was causing it because I was heading straight down to the ocean.

After a few moments of pure terror I realized that I was wearing a life jacket and was bobbing around like a gull and that it really wasn't a problem. I just lay there and sunbathed in the sea until I was rescued. Instead of taking my money back I opted to go back up and parasail again.
