Since 2002, Free Comic Book Day has been the biggest event in the comic book year. This year, the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund is celebrating FCBD with not one, but TWO, amazing offerings! We’ve hit the ground running: Our two FCBD books — Help the CBLDF Defend Comics and Raising a Reader: How Comics & Graphic Novels Can Help Your Kids Love to Read! — are already gathering buzz, gaining coverage on NPR and Wired and landing on several top picks lists from The Detroit News, 13th Dimension, and The Mary Sue.
Help the CBLDF Defend Comics features an all-star line-up of talent, with classic strips and brand new content edited by talented author and MonkeyBrain co-publisher, Chris Roberson. It features several stories about the history of comics censorship and the birth of the Comics Code Authority, and it is a great resource for anyone who wants to learn about the darkest period of comics history. Defend Comics includes comics by Sergio Aragones and Mark Evanier, Fred Van Lente and Ryan Dunlavey, Chris Roberson, Gene Luen Yang, and many more!
Raising a Reader: How Comics & Graphic Novels Can Help Your Kids Love to Read! is an important part of the CBLDF’s ongoing educational program and is intended as a resource for parents, educators, and librarians. Written by education specialist Meryl Jaffe, it features an introduction by Newbery Medal winner Jennifer L. Holm and art by Raina Telgemeier and Matthew Holm. If you’re looking for a way to encourage kids to read, this amazing publication offers tips and ideas about how comics can be used to make kids into lifelong readers!
Free Comic Book Day is a single day — the first Saturday in May each year — when participating comic book shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely free to anyone who comes into their stores. May 3, 2014, is CBLDF’s first year as an official participant, and we’re excited to see you at Free Comic Book Day!
We need your help to keep fighting for the right to read! Help support CBLDF’s important First Amendment work by visiting the Rewards Zone, making a donation, or becoming a member of CBLDF!
