On May 2, comic book stores will kick off Children’s Book Week (May 4-10, 2015), the annual celebration of books for young people and the joy of reading! Children’s Book Council, Every Child a Reader, and the ABC Children’s Group at the American Booksellers Association are sponsoring their annual display contest, and the contest winner will get a visit from a Children’s Book Awards finalist or winner. Six comics are among the nominees, so it’s a great opportunity for comics retailers, too!
Established in 1919, Children’s Book Week is the longest-running national literacy initiative in the country. Every year commemorative events are held nationwide at schools, libraries, bookstores, homes, and now comic book stores! To enter, all you need to do is send pictures of your display (along with photo credit) to Matt at the American Booksellers Association (ABA) by May 1. Displays will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
Your display must be up from at least April 30-May 10 to be considered.
- How well does the display adhere to the Children’s Book Week theme (celebrating children’s books and reading)?
- How eye-catching is it?
- How well does it use the available space?
- How creative and unique is the display?
- Bonus points will be awarded for incorporating the 2015 CBW Poster and the Children’s and Teen Choice Book Awards finalists!
