She Changed Comics Adds BPAL Exclusive, Fun Home, Nimona, & More!

There’s less than a week to go on the Kickstarter for She Changed Comics, CBLDF’s history of the women who changed free expression in comics. Thanks to your overwhelming support, we will be able to create this book and more, including education companion guides for middle school, high school, and higher education, a teaching tour, and even an audiobook! With your support, we hope to achieve one last stretch goal — creating Educational Companion Videos for both teachers and casual viewers alike that support the content in the book.

To help us achieve this new goal, our friends at Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab have developed a brand new fragrance inspired by Jackie Ormes, available exclusively for backers. We also have books signed and sketched by Alison Bechdel and signed books from Noelle Stevenson, Neil Gaiman, and more!

Covering female comics creators from the turn of the 20th century to present day, She Changed Comics will profile more than 60 women who transformed the landscape of free expression and expanded the comics artform. It will also examine the plights of women who have been persecuted for expressing themselves through cartoons and feature interviews with some of the most influential women working in comics today. Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab presents She Changed Comics – JACKIE

Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab celebrates the first Black woman to make a living as a syndicated cartoonist in support of She Changed Comics! Through her comic strip heroines Torchy Brown and Patty-Jo ‘n’ Ginger, Jackie Ormes defied stereotypes and illustrated the day to day struggles of African Americans, and was able to address though her comics not only institutionalized racism and prejudice, but also the issues of that touched women in the workforce, environmental pollution, and other societal concerns that impacted the world she lived in. She later described herself as “antiwar [and] anti-everything-that’s-smelly.”

Antiwar [and] anti-everything-that’s-smelly: sweet red patchouli and orris root with bourbon vanilla, caramelized labdanum, peru balsam, and almond milk.
