Comic Book Legal Defense Fund welcomes FAKKU!, the leading English language publisher and licensor of Japanese adult comics and animation as the organization’s newest corporate member. This month, FAKKU! is celebrating their second anniversary as a book publisher with the definitive English language release of Toshio Maeda’s genre defining hentai Urotsukidoji, one of the books at the core of CBLDF’s defense of Texas v. Castillo beginning in 1999. To further support the Fund, Maeda will be signing and personalizing copies of the new FAKKU! edition for CBLDF donors (get yours here).
FAKKU! founder Jacob Grady says, “I have long been a fan of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund and admire the work the organization does representing and educating comic book fans. CBLDF has an impeccable record of supporting the manga industry despite how unclear some of the laws are regarding adult material. As a publisher of adult material, it’s not just our duty to support CBLDF’s work, it’s an honor to be a part of an organization that does so much good for so many facets of the comics community.”
CBLDF provides legal and educational resources to protect the freedom to read comics. The organization’s legal team has aided numerous manga readers facing prosecution for possessing adult manga, including a notable victory in R. v. Matheson [insert link]. CBLDF produces education tools to help expand appreciation and understanding of manga as a mainstream book category including the Manga Book Club Handbook, released earlier this year and CBLDF Presents Manga: Introduction, Challenges and Best Practices. Manga readers facing a First Amendment emergency should always make CBLDF their first call for support.
CBLDF Executive Director Charles Brownstein says, “We are grateful to FAKKU! for taking a leadership role in their support for CBLDF. Unfortunately, we still receive frequent calls for help when readers of adult manga are prosecuted. You don’t hear about them because our experienced legal team successfully shuts most of these cases down before they have to go to court. FAKKU! is taking a strong step to affirm the rights of their readers and our work on their behalf. We’re very happy to welcome them aboard.”
