CBLDF Announces Exclusives, Signings, and New Programs for Comic-Con!

It’s that special time of year where die-hard fans from every corner of the globe and every type of fandom start gearing up for San Diego Comic-Con, the largest convention in the comics-sphere. From July 18 – 21, 2019 you can find Comic Book Legal Defense Fund at Booth #1918 nonstop, plus our Annual Welcome Party, and tons of new programs! Each year CBLDf brings new and favorite programming to San Diego to offer an opportunity to give back to our supporters in ways that help inform and further the fight for free expression. This year offers some of the most engaging and informative programs to date. 12PM – CBLDF: How Comic Stores Gave Comics Their Voice– Comics flowered into the powerful form of free expression they are today because of comic book stores. This “by fans, for fans” culture helped comics flourish in ways that broadened what the medium can do. How did we get here and how will comic book stores remain an essential part of where comics are going? Meet the innovative retailers and creators who make comic stores the cornerstone of comics’ robust culture of free expression! Panelists include Bob Wayne, Mitch Cutler, Jennifer Haines, and more!

1PM – CBLDF: Comics Censorship in 2019 – Learn how comics are under attack and what you can do to help! From lawsuits against schools for using LGBTQ comics, to intimidation of manga readers by Customs authorities, and persecution of cartoonists around the world, comics censorship remains an urgent problem. CBLDF experts showcase the current censorship landscape at this riveting and informative presentation.

12PM – CBLDF: Take PRIDE in Comics – Why are comics and other literature centered on LGBTQ+ characters targeted so frequently by censors? What can we do to ensure these important books stay on shelves? Join CBLDF and a panel of creators, educators, librarians, and retailers to discuss the challenges facing LGBTQ comics and ways communities can help overcome them. Join authors Jose Villarrubia, Paige Braddock, and more!

1PM – CBLDF: Making Great Comics Programs For Schools & Libraries – Energize your community by creating comics events! Join CBLDF Education Coordinator Holly Dotson and a panel of teachers and creators for a vibrant discussion about how to make great programming with comics. Bring your success stories and learn about how to build on them with tips on creating book clubs, workshops, creator events and more! Gene Luen Yang, Jennifer L. 12PM – CBLDF: The Perils of Selling Comics – Know your rights! Join CBLDF for this fast-paced overview of the legal rights comic book stores depend upon. Learn the law and your rights, while getting tangible how-to info for managing risk scenarios like police visits, media attacks, and more. A must-attend for current and aspiring comic store staffers and creators alike!

1PM – CBLDF: Teaching With Comics!
Comics are more than just great entertainment, they’re an incredible tool for learning. Join creators and teachers and bring your own success stories for a discussion about how comics can be used to engage students in the classroom. Get real-world suggestions for ways to integrate comics in the classroom, to expand on lessons with comic-based activities, and to encourage student participation. Panelists include authors Colleen AF Venable and Matthew Loux, moderated by CBLDF Education Coordinator Holly Dotson

8PM – CBLDF Live Art Auction
Support CBLDF’s important work by bidding on original art by amazing creators at CBLDF’s Live Art Auction, presented by IDW Publishing and Splash Page Comic Art. Includes original art from Charlie Adlard, Sam Kieth, Terry Moore, J. O’Barr, Walter Simonson, Jeff Smith, Gabriel Rodriguez, and many more, plus scripts, prints and memorabilia and more! CBLDF: Live Art Jam – Celebrate 50 Years of Comic-Con by seeing art made right before your eyes! The CBLDF Live Art Jam brings together a panel of comics artists who will create art live, while sharing their favorite Comic-Con memories. Bid on the pieces created here to support CBLDF’s important work protecting comics’ First Amendment rights!
