Give More Than Gifts This Holiday Season

The holidays can be a chaotic time of year. The sunlight hours are getting ever shorter and against the encroaching darkness we strive to fit more and more into each day. Gift buying and wrapping, food shopping and cooking, work parties, ugly sweater parties, white-elephant parties. And in the midst of all the fun, and laughter, and joy, many of us seek to give gifts with extra meaning, to remind our loved ones and ourselves how lucky we are to be together.

With gifts from Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, we can give more than just amazing graphic novels signed by top creators. Each purchase helps protect free expression in the coming year. With donations received last year, CBLDF was able to provide legal aid and expertise in nine different court cases, including a flurry of customs crises, in which comics readers had their packages seized at the border. CBLDF was able to protect access to valuable books like Fun Home, and defend displays, like the LGBTQIA display in Maine religious leaders tried to strong arm a library into removing. We developed and presented two new presentations about the power of comics as free expression, which donations like yours helped reach thousands of people all over the world.

On top of giving a gift that stands for free expression, a lot of the graphic novels that are in the CBLDF 2018 Gift Guide have a ton of free resources designed for educators, librarians, and students to help delve deeper into these important literary works. Let the gift reciepiant know you’re giving them more than just a book, and a pledge to protect free expression – there are also discussion guides, case studies, and teaching resources available for free on CBLDF.org.
