You are an artist making parody drawings when you receive a threatening letter from a large company alleging that you are stealing their property. They’re demanding that you forfeit your original art and pay them damages. You know your rights, but you can’t afford a lawyer. You need someone to stand up for you.
You are a librarian, and the local news media are running stories that you’re peddling pornography to kids because a parent reviewed and approved a horror comic book her teenager checked out from the adult section of your library, and is now blaming you for her error. You didn’t do anything wrong but your name is being tarnished. You need someone to speak up for you.
These are just a few of the real cases that the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund encountered this year, and thanks to our help, they all were managed with positive results. Threats to readers, creators, and people who sell and lend comics are real, and happen regularly. The CBLDF combats those threats swiftly and expertly. Today we need your help to continue performing this important work.
This October, CBLDF is asking you to Be Counted and become a member. We aim to sign up 1,000 new or renewing members with a goal of raising $75,000 to advance our program work. Your membership contributions will ensure we are able to continue to perform important legal work at a moment’s notice. They will also help us to continue our vital education work, including giving seminars to lawyers, librarians, students and individuals all over the United States about ways to protect the comics field’s First Amendment rights. You’ll also help us make new tools to protect the rights of comics readers including special publications for librarians and the development of a more expansive Kids’ Right to Read program.
