On Saturday, comics fans around Las Vegas will gather for the Vegas Valley Comic Book Festival, and CBLDF will be on hand at artist’s Alley table #40 with She Changed Comics and more!
The Vegas Falley Comic Book Festival is a free event taking place 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. at the Clark County Library (1401 E. Flamingo Road). CBLDF Editorial Director Betsy Gomez and board member Katherine Keller will be on hand at table #40 and for the following CBLDF panel:
She Changed Comics: The Women Who Changed Free Expression
2:00 p.m. • Jewel Box Theatre
In the Golden and Silver Ages, pioneering female cartoonists challenged gender and color barriers to establish a place for women in comics. In the turbulent 1960s and 1970s, underground cartoonists used the comics page to advance feminism and teach public health, while the alternative cartoonists of the 1980s and 1990s produced groundbreaking personal and political narratives. Join Betsy Gomez, CBLDF editorial director and She Changed Comics editor, and Katherine Keller, CBLDF board member, as they examine the creators, editors and publishers who blazed new trails and inspired today’s landscape of increasingly diverse and empowering comics storytelling.
Gomez will also participate in “Beyond the Femme Fatal: Reimagining the Female Villain” alongside Professor Ben Saunders (University of Oregon’s Minor in Comics), Amy Chu (Poison Ivy), James Robinson (Scarlet Witch, Starman), and Jay Edidin (Jay & Miles X-plain the X-Men). The panel takes place at 1:00 p.m. in the Jewel Box Theater.
