Half Price Books, the nation’s largest family-owned new and used bookstore chain, has joined the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund (CBLDF) as its newest corporate member.

Half Price Books has long been an advocate of the freedom to read and to make sure books are accessible to all who want them. The chain will celebrate this new partnership with the CBLDF with a Comic Book Giveaway at all of its stores on Saturday, May 3. Customers will receive a free comic book with any in-store purchase.

“First Amendment rights have been a part of Half Price Books’ core values since the company was founded back in 1972,” said Kathy Doyle Thomas, executive vice president and chief strategy officer of Half Price Books. “We’re thrilled to partner with a great organization like CBLDF and look forward to sharing our love of comics with a broader audience.”

Half Price Books sells new, used and collectible comic books at its locations, many of which have special comic book-related sales and events throughout the year. The bookstore celebrates the freedom to read each September during Banned Books Week.

“We’re proud to welcome Half Price Books to our Corporate Member circle,” says CBLDF Executive Director Charles Brownstein. “Their commitment makes it possible for us to advance our important work protecting the freedom to read, which includes our signature work on Banned Books Week and the Kids’ Right to Read Project. We’re very grateful to be partners with such a vital, forward looking organization.”

CBLDF’s Corporate Membership consists of leaders from the publishing, distribution, and retail aspects of the comics industry. Half Price Books joins Abrams, Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab, Boom! Studios, ComiXology, Dark Horse, DC Comics, DCBS.com, Diamond Comic Distributors, IDW, Image, Random House, ReedPop, TFAW.com, and Valiant as a CBLDF Corporate Member.
