Every parent worries about their children sliding in the summer, forgetting the valuable lessons they learned in school the previous year. But no one has the time or energy to spend their summer creating lessons and doing homework with their kids. Instead, why not read comics with your kids! Comics offer valuable lessons in vocabulary, and visual literacy, plus improve reading skills and comprehension. It also doesn’t need to be an expensive endeavor, most libraries have great selections of comics for different age ranges, and interests. It’s never too early to start sharing your passions with the young ones in your life.
Because of all this, Comic Book Legal Defense Fund is proud to continually offer Raising a Reader! How Comics & Graphic Novels Can Help Your Kids Love To Read!, a resource for parents & educators about the learning benefits of comics! This new resource is written by Dr. Meryl Jaffe, with an introduction by three-time Newbery Award honoree Jennifer L. Holm (Babymouse, Squish) and art by Eisner Award winner Raina Telgemeier (Smile, Drama) and Eisner Award nominee Matthew Holm (Babymouse, Squish). Graphic design was handled by Brooklyn-based designer David Herman. Raising A Reader! was made possible by a grant from the Gaiman Foundation.
